Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
What is an HMO?
An HMO Plan is a type of Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) offered by a private insurance company. When you have an HMO, you generally must get your care and services from doctors, other healthcare providers, and hospitals in the plan’s network, except:
- Emergency Care
- Out-of-area urgent care
- Temporary out-of-area dialysis
*HMOs must provide you with the same benefits, rights, and protections as Original Medicare, but they may do so with different rules, restrictions, and costs. Some HMOs offer additional benefits, such as vision and hearing care.
